Lesson 5 of 17 · What trading actually costs

Slippage: The Off-Schedule Fee

Crypto exchanges publish detailed fee schedules. Spot taker, spot maker, futures taker, futures maker, withdrawal per asset — every cost laid out, tier by tier. What none of them publish is the cost that, for most retail traders, is the single largest line item on every trade: slippage.

Slippage is the difference between the price you see on your screen when you click "buy" and the price your order actually fills at. It's not a fee in the technical sense — no one collects it as revenue — but it costs you money exactly the same way a fee does, and it appears immediately in your average entry price.

The size of slippage depends on three things: how deep the order book is at your intended price (more depth means less price impact from your order), how wide the bid-ask spread is, and how fast the book is reshuffling. On a deep-book BTC/USDT market buy, slippage is typically 0.02% or lower. On a thin-book altcoin in a volatile moment, the same dollar order can suffer 0.80% slippage or more. That's a 40-fold difference in cost between two trades the exchange charges the exact same fee for.

The cumulative impact over a trading year is often larger than the total cost of the published fees. A trader doing 100 round trips per month on low-liquidity assets, at 0.5% average slippage per round trip, is paying roughly 1% per trade in execution cost alone — five to twenty times what the headline taker fee suggests.

The fixes are unsexy and effective. Use limit orders when you can tolerate the fill uncertainty — you eliminate slippage on the maker side entirely. Split large orders into smaller pieces to reduce market impact. Avoid the thinnest hours (typically late US night / early Asia open for most pairs). Check book depth at your intended size before submitting. None of this costs anything; all of it improves your real cost basis.

Trading involves risk; execution quality is one variable in your cost stack, not a guarantee about market direction.
